A friend and contemporary of John Coltrane, tenor saxophonist Benny Golson is one of jazz’s stellar figures. Having made his name in the ’50s as a member of bands led by Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey, the early ’60s saw him striking out on his own, co-forming The Jazztet with trumpeter-flugelhornist Art Farmer. By the early ’70s he was established as a Hollywood composer (his TV credits include It Takes a Thief, Mission: Impossible and The Six Million Dollar Man), and during the latter part of that decade he became involved with the fusion style of jazz then prevalent. This reissue comprises 1977’s Killer Joe, the first of his two Columbia albums, which features a funky update of the eponymous Golson-penned jazz standard, with lyrics by Quincy Jones. Also on offer are the sinuous cop show grooves of Walkin’ and Stalkin’ and Timbale Rock, the latter bearing the raucous vocals of Latin percussionist Willie Bobo. Bonus tracks include the rare 12” single version of the Earth, Wind & Fire-styled I’m Always Dancin’ to the Music, from Golson’s final Columbia album. Remastered from the original analogue tapes. Includes an eight-page booklet with extensive new liner note.
