BRAVO!!! BRILLIANT!!! Magnificent restoration!!!

Ever since I invested heavily in SQ quadraphonic albums and playback system, almost 50 years ago, there was one recording that was singular: A young Pierre Boulez, in the middle of the New York Philharmonic, surrounding my room, playing the Bartók "Concerto for Orchestra"!!!

Lots of comments were posted in the HiFi magazines, back then, about playing this amazing recording full open and blowing fuses on speakers, because the sonics and performance were so wonderful.

Unfortunately, SONY engineers, at beginning of SACD did not trust the original engineers and they removed the wrap-around sonics from their SACD issue.

The Dutton remastering of the original sonics is a dream come true!!! Gorgeous playing, impassioned performance, and the NY Philharmonic embraces your room!!!

The "Miraculous Mandarin" performance is also phenomenal. It reproduces an acoustic in Philharmonic (Avery Fisher) Hall that DOESN'T EXIST, at present, as the Hall is now in yet another reconstruction. The AEOLIAN SKINNER pipe organ heard in the recording is now in the Crystal Cathedral in Orange County, California, as part of the Hazel Wright Organ.

The "Mandarin" performance is also excellent, and includes the complete ballet, with the choral parts, needed at the end of the ballet. Most performances are the Suite, which omits the choral singing, which is the MIRACLE, when the Mandarin finally dies in orgasmic magic.

TWO MARVELOUS RECORDINGS!!! GET THIS DISC!!!

An excellent, involving and very satisfying release. Fascinating to read about the complex recording process in the booklet too. Recommended!
The lost art of Quadrophony

This recording was made by a Conductor and Producer who got together and set out to provide an immersive musical experience for the listener. Why doesn't this happen today? The result is a superb recording of these Bartok pieces. The recording is wonderful. Each instrument group is very well recorded, and the immersive experience is total. I owned the SQ quadraphonic LP of the Miraculous Mandarin and so can directly compare the recording. The SA-CD provides the obvious better channel separation and dynamic range. It is vastly superior in every way. The only possible criticism I can level is that these compositions are not the sort of thing you want to listen to often. They do require your total attention to enjoy them. Not for casual listening and they don't leave you humming along!
