John Foulds Volume 3

John Foulds
Volume 3

Following the success of Dutton Epoch's first two volumes of John Foulds' melodious lighter fare, this third traversal of a forgotten but agreeably tuneful repertoire reveals even more delights. The ten works presented here in fact fall into some 18 separate movements. The early Undine Suite starts as he meant to go on with a Prlude Romantique followed by musical visits to Kashmir, China and Hungary, all rounded with the Gaelic Dream-Song and Basque Serenade.

Undine: Suite d'Orchestre op.3 (ca. 1898)
Kashmiri Boat Song (ca. 1936)
Chinese Suite op.95 (1935)
A Gaelic Dream-Song op.68 (1922)
Basque Serenade (ca. 1937-38)
Kashmiri Wedding Procession (1936)
Miniature Suite op.38 (1913)
Scne Picaresque (Spanish Serenade) (1936)
Gipsy Czrds (Tzigeuner) (by Karl Kotschka pseud.) (1935) CF
Kashmiri Boat Song on Jhelum River (ca. 1936)

CF Cynthia Fleming (violin solo)
BBC Concert Orchestra
Ronald Corp (conductor)

World premiere recordings

Recorded at Abbey Road Studio no.1, 10-12 September 2013

"Both previous instalments in this valuable series boasted more than their fair share of gems, and much the same applies to this newcomer."

"Lively, affectionate-sounding performances under Ronald Corp's sympathetic direction have been pleasingly captured by the Dutton microphones."

Andrew Achenbach, Gramophone
