Simply Startling

- 09/27/2018

Based on Swedish Film Director Ingmar Bergman's 1956 comedy 'Smiles of a Summer Night' Broadway Legend Stephen Sondheim has fashioned a star studded production which through the 'miracle' of Quadraphonic Sound and Michael Dutton's astounding remastering brings to life this 1973 Broadway Production in vivid ULTRA DISCRETE contemporary sonics. A Must buy if you love Broadway musicals.

Incredible Remastering of a Classic Cast Recording

- 11/04/2018

If you are a fan of the music of Stephen Sondheim, one of the greatest composers of our time, you will revel in this superbly remastered multi-channel release. This is one of Sondheim’s best scores and when you hear the voices of the opening measures bouncing from one speaker to another, you will thrill to this music as if hearing it for the first time. I am hoping there will be future SACD’s of cast albums from this era. Very highly recommended and a must for musical theater fans who appreciate great sound for their HiFi equipment!

Excellent Sondheim Re-master

- 06/30/2019

If you missed the quadraphonic craze of the 1970s here's your chance to catch up. I've owned the original stereo mix of this album on vinyl back in the day. But this is my first time catching the quad version. If you have the proper set up (a surround system with equivalent/same size speakers in every position and a player that will decode a SACD) this recording is top rate.
Of course, it takes some getting used to hearing a performer sing his entire solo from the rear left corner of the room. Perhaps an acquired taste. But when those Sondheim quartets let loose and performers are everywhere, it's like the show is in full swing and you're sitting right on the stage.
The album was originally produced by masters of the art form Goddard Lieberson and Thomas Z. Shepard. This Vocalion release was mixed from the original tapes by Michael J. Dutton. Columbia had Sondheim's "Company" mixed for quad as well, three years prior to this. We can only hope that Vocalion will go to work on that one as well.
Highly recommended.
