It’s great to finally hear this extraordinary collection of Ravel pieces conducted by Boulez with the NYPO. It goes without saying that this is gorgeous music. I most wanted to hear disc one, because it features one of my all time favorite pieces, Le Tombeau de Couperin. I have a few versions, but I think this might be my favorite at present. The tempos are for the most part where they should be, and the orchestration in this recording is extremely clear. What really makes this multichannel release stand out is the fact that for once we’re not just treated to a stereo presentation of the orchestra in front with hall ambience in the rears as is the practice with so many orchestral recordings. Instead, the listener is placed more towards the middle of the orchestra. Percussion instruments, harp, etc. are placed in the rears, which makes for very immersive experience. So very few orchestral record recordings in multichannel recordings take advantage of this.

I’m giving this five stars because the performances are stellar and the recording quality, especially considering this was recorded in like 1973, is excellent, in fact, way better than I thought it would be. I honestly couldn’t be more pleased.
