Brilliant Surround Recordings of Mahler, with Brahms bonus
- 09/11/2018
Levine conducts exciting, beautiful recordings of Mahler 1st and 4th Symphonies, recorded with orchestra wrapped around the listener, by RCA. This disc was issued in response to CBS recording Bartok's "Concerto for Orchestra" with Boulez and the New York Philharmonic for SQ Quadraphonic Matrix surround Lp. That Lp was the cause of many quad audiophiles blowing speaker fuses during high playback levels.

RCA, with its discrete CD-4 process, began recording some repertoire also in wrap-around surround and that led to these two Mahler recordings. The performances are uniformly excellent, plus the recordings allow the listener to be right in the wash of crisp orchestral sound.

These recordings sound better that ever in the resplendent remasterings by Michael Dutton.

BRAVO!!! The Brahms 1st Symphony is a great bonus. A youthful, moving performance of a perennial favorite, with luminous orchestra playing and straightforward performance

DO NOT MISS!!!
