"Stanley Black's orchestral fantasies touch upon Argentina and Andalusia in this double reissue of dramatically produced concept albums from the golden age of thematically presented mood music. What makes both All-Time Top Tangos and Spain much more substantial and interesting than his Red Velvet and Music for Romance albums is the inclusion of authentic instrumentation and traditional vocalizing. The tango stratum is dominated by accordion and brass; the Spanish studies bring in flamenco guitar and vocals along with bursts of conversation in the mother tongue. All of these elements keep the string orchestra at bay. As if to gild the picturesque landscape, Black finishes off with a full-blown suite of themes from Georges Bizet 's opera Carmen."
