Hum Dono vinyl LP now available

Joe Harriott & Amancio D'Silva: Hum Dono

To complement our CD reissue and digital download, Vocalion now presents this vinyl LP reissue of a landmark recording in the British jazz pantheon.

Released in 1969, the Joe Harriott-Amancio D’Silva Quartet’s “Hum Dono” album represents a startling blend of Indian, Caribbean and Western influences and in the 21st century sounds as fresh and as contemporary as it did the day it was recorded. Harriott is regarded as a pioneer of the free-jazz movement of the 1960s, with a string of classic albums to his name; D’Silva was among the most adventurous jazz guitarists of his generation, having recorded in a variety of styles and with such albums as “Integration,” “Cosmic Eye” and “Konkan Dance” to his credit. On “Hum Dono,” the two leaders are accompanied by a stellar line-up comprising Ian Carr (flugelhorn), Bryan Spring (drums), Dave Green (bass) and the inimitable Norma Winstone (vocals). Together, these remarkable musicians create inspired, forward-looking jazz throughout the album’s six titles, leaving us in no doubt as to why “Hum Dono” is so highly regarded.

Cut direct from analogue stereo tapes by renowned mastering engineer Noel Summerville and pressed on 180g virgin vinyl, “Hum Dono” has never sounded better.

Our latest release

Vocalion presents a traditionally bumper crop of titles for our Christmas release. There’s a wide range of American and European easy listening releases by some of the brightest names from the music’s golden era. Famed American conductor Arthur Fiedler is featured on two “3 albums on 2” 2-CD sets compiling several of the best albums by the Boston Pops Orchestra. Among those albums is 1964’s Pops Goes the Trumpet featuring trumpeter Al Hirt and the 1963 classic Jalousie, which includes an updated recording of the Boston Pops’ million-selling single of the same name. 1968’s Fantasy and Improvisations teams Fiedler and the Boston Pops with pianist Peter Nero in the premiere recording of Nero’s superb jazz concerto while 1965’s Nero Goes Pops showcases the Nero-Fiedler-Pops triumvirate in a programme of Gershwin pieces. Another American pianist – Floyd Cramer – is heard in the Dallas/The Best of the West “2 on 1” CD, which features him applying his own unique touch to such famous television and film themes as Dallas, Taxi, Knots Landing and The Big Valley. Big bands are represented by the fabulous “Tonight Show” orchestra led by Skitch Henderson – musical director of the Johnny Carson-hosted “The Tonight Show”. Henderson is also featured in a more romantic, orchestral setting in the Hollywood Award Winners!/Lush and Lovely “2 on 1” pairing while American light music legends Andre Kostelanetz and Morton Gould are showcased with two CDs devoted to their music.

Three of its biggest names represent the European easy listening/light music scene of the 1970s: James Last, Paul Mauriat and Roberto Delgado. James Last really needs no introduction – his albums sold by the million and his distinctive brand of up-tempo orchestral easy listening is instantly recognisable. Across two CDs, Vocalion presents four of his albums, among them his funky take on the music from counter-culture musical Hair and his disco takes on a number of American songbook standards (1978’s World Hits). French orchestra leader Paul Mauriat returns to Vocalion with a further five albums from his extensive discography, all of which feature his beguilingly sweeping orchestrations. He plays a range of material including Brazilian music and contemporary European, American and French pop alongside various film and television themes. Roberto Delgado – the pseudonym of German orchestra leader Horst Wende – turns his attention to the music of Greece with two albums showcasing the distinctive sound of the bouzouki while Caterina Valente is featured on two albums – Happy Caterina (1967) & The Caterina Valente Singers (1965). The latter album has musical direction by Johnny Keating and a young, pre-Led Zeppelin Jimmy Page on guitar. German trumpeter Roy Etzel, a member of various orchestras including the Max Greger Orchestra, makes his first appearance on Vocalion with two albums originally recorded for Teldec in the late 1960s: What’s New – Mr. Trumpet & Hello Mr. Trumpet.

We proudly present a classic British jazz album of the late 1960s – the legendary Hum Dono recorded by alto saxophonist Joe Harriott and guitarist Amancio D’Silva. Accompanying them is a stellar line-up that includes Bryan Spring (drums), Dave Green (bass), Ian Carr (flugelhorn) and Norma Winstone (vocal), and this fascinating blend of Indian and Caribbean influences with modern jazz really is one of the high watermarks in British jazz. Gabor Szabo, another virtuoso jazz guitarist, is showcased on two CDs that reissue the superb jazz-fusion albums he recorded in America for the Mercury label in the late 1970s. Faces (1977) was produced by trombonist and ex-Crusader Wayne Henderson and saw Szabo accompanied by musicians from the soul-jazz-funk band Pleasure, while 1976’s Nightflight was recorded in Philadelphia and was indebted to the soulful sounds of the famous Philadelphia International label.

Chappell & Bruton Music
November 2014

Film, Show & Library

Following Vocalion’s reissue series that focused on the KPM 1000 Series – one of the world’s most famous recorded music libraries – we now present another selection of original albums and compilations taken from two other leading recorded music libraries: the Chappell Library and Bruton Music. Established in 1941, the Chappell Library has to its credit numerous well-known television and radio themes. Founded in 1977 by Robin Phillips, who had previously steered the KPM 1000 Series to such great success, Bruton Music rapidly established itself as one of the UK’s premier music libraries.

Recorded in the 1970s and ’80s, the music here was used extensively in films and documentaries and on television and radio. Several of Britain’s most gifted arranger-composers are featured, among them Roger Webb, Pete Moore, Steve Gray, Johnny Pearson, Keith Mansfield, John Scott, Francis Monkman, David Lindup and Brian Bennett. The music ranges from lush, orchestral easy listening, up-tempo jazz-fusion and soundtrack-styled orchestral suites through to dramatic, Sweeney-style cop-show music and futuristic, electronic music à la Vangelis, Tomita and Tangerine Dream. Much of this material is receiving its first commercial release and these CDs represent the beautifully realised, high quality music that was Chappell and Bruton’s hallmark.
