Postage charges

Royal Mail has done it again, we’re sorry to say. From 31 March 2014, postage prices are going up for 1st and 2nd class UK mail and overseas mail (Europe/Rest of World).

With respect to our charges, there is some good news. The UK mail will remain the same and the overseas mail will increase by only 25p.

The 'signed for' charges will also remain the same. So not too bad!

2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, and each of these CDs contains music that, in its own way, comment on this tragic episode in human history. Elgar’s epic three-movement The Spirit of England, Op. 80 (CDLX 7172) effectively his War Requiem, sets poems by Laurence Binyon, while Ivor Gurney’s War Elegy is another deeply affecting composition. CDLX 7243 includes Gurney’s orchestral song cycle Lights Out (1918-25) to words by Edward Thomas, who had been killed in France in 1917, while CDLX 7280 features contemporary English composer Ronald Corp’s magnificent work for baritone, chorus and orchestra, And all the Trumpets Sounded (1989), which Corp intended as a companion piece for Vaughan Williams’s Dona nobis pacem.

Walter Braunfels
Piano Concerto
& Schottische

German composer Walter Braunfels built a considerable reputation before the 1930s as composer, pianist and teacher. Since his death in 1954 his operas have been heard again, and Dutton Epoch now presents world premiere recordings of two remarkable concertos, for piano and viola. These are considerable discoveries: the Piano Concerto, Op.21, first performed in 1911, is notable for its sweeping cantilenas, vivid expression and orchestral colour. Victor Sangiorgio is authoritative in the demanding solo part. Over twenty years later came the Schottische Phantasie for Viola & Orchestra, Op.47, a large-scale viola concerto eloquently played by Sarah-Jane Bradley. The programme is completed by the Shakespeare-inspired miniature tone poem Ariels Gesang, Op.18.

John Foulds Volume 3

Arnold Bax Symphony in F (realised by Martin Yates).

24-bit Studio Master FLAC/ALAC

Bax Symphony number nought at last! The piano score of Arnold Bax’s Symphony in F of 1907 was completed by its composer but never orchestrated, and has long been one of the great “might-have-beens” of the British symphonic repertoire, along with Elgar’s Third Symphony and E. J. Moeran’s Second. Unlike Elgar and Moeran, Bax actually completed his symphony, and now Martin Yates has set it into full score, managing to catch the elusive, idiomatic sound of Bax’s orchestra in a convincing way we never expected to hear. The glorious second movement in particular, on a similar scale to his many later tone poems, is revealed as a striking and poetic creation in which Bax finds his voice. All lovers of English music will want to get to grips with this epic, romantic score.
