"Another must for all violin aficionados is a pastel-shaded programme of three Delius violin sonatas played by Albert Sammons - yes, all three, thanks to Mike Dutton who has miraculously accessed a previously unpublished 1929 recording of the First Sonata."
"Sammons's lean, sweet tone and quick, narrow vibrato common not only to Delius but to Edmund Rubbra's deeply expressive if rather more exotic Second Sonata with Gerald Moore at the piano."
Rob Cowan, Replay, Gramophone, June 2007

The Rubbra-Gruenberg-Pleeth Trio, heard on this release, had its origins during the Second World War, when Edmund Rubbra and William Pleeth (cello) were in the Army Classical Music Group. After WWII, and several violinists later, the young Erich Gruenberg joined, and in this grouping the Trio became well known, only disbanding as a regular ensemble at the end of the 1950s. Here they perform Rubbra’s Piano Trio in One Movement op.68 (1949-50) and Mozart’s Piano Trio no.1 in G major - both originally issued on a rare early 1950s Argo LP – as well as the Adagio cantabile from Haydn’s Piano Trio in F sharp minor. The legendary Griller Quartet provide a typically exquisite reading of Rubbra’s String Quartet no.2 in E flat major (1950-51), making this an essential release for lovers of British and European chamber music.

“Here is an example of a record company getting everything right. An outstanding artist playing worthy yet neglected repertoire in beautifully recorded sound.”
Jeremy Siepmann, BBC Music Magazine, October 2001

“Although all these pieces do exist in various other versions, Michael Dussek’s fine survey is undoubtedly the one to have.”

If you warmed to Dutton Epoch’s recording of Edmund Rubbra’s string quartets (CDLX 7114 and 7123), you will love this. The Tippett String Quartet, one of the most exciting young groups recently to appear, play Dodgson’s rewarding music with commitment and understanding. Dodgson’s is music for today, in a language with which all can engage, and while, for example, in the first quartet the composer acknowledged the influence of Janacek, to the listener Dodgson’s personal voice is immediate and compelling.

"Dodgeson has dedictated his long composing career to the goals of economy and purity. He has written plenty of vocal and dramatic music, but it is his abstract thinking that stands out. It is enshrined in a body of quartets now totalling nine, being released by Dutton in three volumes."
"This first contains nos 1, 5, 6 & 7, dispatched with vigour and incisiveness by these young players."
Paul Driver, The Sunday Times, 8 April 2007
