The immortal sound of baritone Heinrich Schlusnus is served up in this second volume, collating his recordings from the late 1920s and ’30s. Among the many delights on offer are Schlusnus’s peerless readings of Mahler’s group of songs Lieder Eines Fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer), arias from Pique Dame and Eugen Onegin (Tchaikovsky), Fürst Igor (Borodin) and The Tales of Hoffmann (Offenbach). Other composers represented include Richard Strauss, Pressel, Robert Radecke, Wolf, Giordano and Lortzing. On some pieces Schlusnus is accompanied by pianists and his regular collaborators Franz Rupp, Michael Raucheisen and Sebastian Peschko. The majority of items feature full orchestral accompaniment; conductors include Leo Blech, Manfred Gurlitt and Hermann Weigert.
