British arranger-composer-pianist Steve Race is the subject of this release, which compiles two of his albums recorded in the mid-1960s for World Record Club, EMI’s mail-order music label. And fine albums they are, too, featuring a stellar line-up of British jazz and session musicians performing Steve’s tasteful, inventive scores. ‘Take One’ (1965) focuses on music from the movies, including Steve’s versions of Days of Wine and Roses, On Green Dolphin Street and Maria among others. ‘Dance to the TV Themes’ (1963) is self-explanatory, and on this occasion Steve’s big band was populated by such musicians as Tubby Hayes (tenor sax), Johnny Scott (flute/piccolo) and Stan Roderick (trumpet). The TV themes treated to the Race touch include Route 66, Z Cars, Perry Mason, Coronation Street and Man of the World.
Remastered from the original stereo analogue tapes.
